What Does Rest Look Like for You?
When we talk about training, we talk about strength, endurance, and consistency. But rest? That one tends to get brushed aside or worse, seen as weakness.
The truth is, rest isn’t the absence of effort: it’s an essential part of growth. But rest doesn’t look the same for everyone. For some, it’s a full day off the bike with feet up and Netflix on. For others, it’s a slow yoga flow, a walk with the dog, or a quiet coffee before the day kicks off.
The question isn’t if you need rest. It’s what kind of rest you actually need.
Active vs. Passive Rest
There’s a difference between doing nothing and recovering intentionally.
Active rest might mean a light spin, a hike, or mobility work — something that keeps you moving without pushing your limits.
Passive rest is when you truly unplug — extra sleep, a nap, or simply saying no to that extra thing on your calendar.
Both matter. Both count. The magic happens when you learn to listen to your body and give it what it’s really asking for.
Listening to Your Body
Rest looks different depending on where you are in your training, your life, and your stress levels. If you’re constantly tired, moody, or finding it hard to stay motivated, your body isn’t being lazy, it’s sending you signals.
Recovery isn’t just physical. It’s emotional and mental, too. Sometimes “rest” is getting out in nature with your friends. Sometimes it’s saying no to plans and turning off your phone.
Why It Matters
When you rest, you rebuild. Muscles repair, energy returns, and motivation resets. Without it, you burn out and that’s the fastest way to derail your progress both on and off the bike.
Taking time to rest doesn’t make you less dedicated. It makes you a smarter, stronger athlete and a more balanced human being.
Your Version of Rest
So, what does rest look like for you?
Maybe it’s slow mornings, early nights, or a quiet winter weekend. Maybe it’s a solo ride where you pedal just for fun.
Whatever it is, honor it.
Rest isn’t earned, it’s essential.
Because when you take care of your body, your body takes care of you. 💜
